Federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate

The federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate was created in 1946 by uniting parts of Prussia - the south of the Rhine Province and the west of Hesse-Nassau - with the Bavarian administrative district of Palatinate and Rhine-Hesse. With around 4.1 million inhabitants, Rhineland-Palatinate ranks sixth among Germany's federal states in terms of the number of its inhabitants and ninth in terms of its area. With just under 220,000 inhabitants, the state capital Mainz is also the most populous city in the state. Other major centres are the regions around Ludwigshafen, Koblenz, Trier and Kaiserslautern.
