Federal Minister of Research announces National Decade against Post-infectious Diseases

Federal Minister of Research Dorothee Bär announced the National Decade against Post-infectious Diseases in November 2025. The initiative will allow for comprehensive research into post-infectious diseases such as Long COVID and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).

The aim of the German government and the other health research partners is to strengthen research in a targeted way, thus gradually improving the care of affected patients in the long term. The initiative will run from 2026 to 2036. Total funding of 500 million euros is earmarked for this purpose. This should help accelerate research into underlying causes and disease mechanisms and aid the development of new treatment options.

Close collaboration between the Federal Government, academia, the health system, business and patients’ organisations should allow for faster implementation of new scientific findings into medical practice.
